About Genre Project

My group decided to research for the sub genre tragic romance. Tragic Romance is a sub genre of Romance that portrays a love story that ultimately fails due to a tragedy that befalls the couple. The history of Tragic Romance is rooted from ancient myths and classical litaratures. Examples of this would be stories like Romeo and Juliet, This is one of the most famous tragic romance stories we have seen on film. Films like this provided an early example of tragic love as we witness the death of lovers; stories like “Romeo and Juliet” set the foundation to the tragic romance films we see in today’s world. My group choose this sub genre as it is very popular and many people can related to tragic romance through past relationships.

The Titanic : This clip from the titanic represents tragic romance as changed how we perceived romantic tragedies as we know it. Jack dies at the end of the movie so this indicates the tragic romance aspect as the lovers are separated.

Juliet and Romeo: Romeo and Juliet represent one of the very first tragic romance stories, written by William Shakespeare as a play, that was later turned into a film. This story exemplifies how the couple are fated lovers meant to be together but are torn apart by the tragedy of  a family feud, forced distance, and death. Additionally, the story of Romeo and Juliet is very widely known by many cultures and can be seen having adaptations of the storyline.

The Notebook: In the clip below it highlights the tension between two characters that fell in love but now have separate lives. We learn that Noah wrote 365 letters for Allie, but Allie never received them, so she thought that it was over for them; but it wasn’t.The Notebook is a more newer version of tragic romance as it came out in 2004. The movie highlights a epic love story but then destroys the audience with a heartbreak as Noah and Allie are forced to go separate ways. Both characters begin their new lives, but they once again find their way back to each other. They grow old together but we discover that Allie has Alzheimer so she writes the “the notebook” which highlights her romance with Noah so as her sickness worsens, she can remember her love for Noah. Noah reads the Notebook to her daily. This makes it fall into the tragic aspect as her sickness is separating her from the love of her life Noah. This would be classic as  it features a central love story that is ultimately overshadowed by the heart-wrenching tragedy of Alzheimer's disease, which separates the lovers in their later years.
