Blog Post: Media Log for September

Over the past month I have been consuming media by watching shows, movies, and listening to music. At the beginning of the month, I have been watching three shows: Love Island Games season 2, Love Island UK season 12, and The Casefile Podcast.

1.) Love Island games: September 1-October 5

Streaming app: Peacock

Season 2

In Love Island Games contestants from previous seasons of regular love island compete with each other to win a prize of $250,000 competitors, otherwise known as 'islanders,' pair into couples, some people are there entirely for the money, while others came for love as well, there are also duels that islanders can be put into for doing poorly in a challenge, they can also be put in a duel from the winners of a challenge known as the 'power couple.' An example of a duel can be seen in Episode 8 the islanders Chris, Johnny, Andrea, and Kay-Kay had their duels, in the duel they had to fight for a Sandbag and put it in color assigned corners and have it there at the end of a 45 second timer for two rounds. Kay-Kay and Andrea went up against each other, and Andrea had won due to her having a size and strength advantage over Kay-Kay. After that first match Johnny and Chris went up against each other, and the duel was really close due to them both being very strong, however Chris broke his finger in the first round and could not compete further, leading Johnny to win the duel. I used mis en scene to analyze the reality TV show which helped me better understand the emotions of the people in the show. The producers use over the shoulder shots and wide shots to give the audience a large views of the area and to also see what the real people are experiencing which helps conveys meaning

2.) Love Island UK: September 1- on going!!

Steaming App: Hulu

Season 12

In Love Island UK people come from all around the United Kingdom in search of love. They are paired into couples that will work together, face hardships together, and sleep in the same beds. In their time there they can also get to know others who are also in couples, every once in a while, there will be new islanders known as 'bombshells' that walk in to test connections and potentially couple up with others in a recoupling event, which more often than not will leave one islander single and sent back home. I used the Diegetic and non-diegetic sound and analyzed how the music contributes to the real-life feelings the islander's exhibit. The producers make sure to use music that matches the setting which makes the audience relate to the mood. The producers also do single shots individually with the islanders so it reminds the audience how the islanders are real people with real feelings.

3.) Casefile Podcast
Steaming App: Spotify or Apple Podcasts
September 12
Episode 22

In the casefile Podcast, there is an anonymous Australian man recapping the events of real killings that happened, which were solved. He talks about what occurred on the night the killing happened, the detective work that goes into solving the crimes, and the perpetrators of the crimes. I listened to the sound finding the tone and the dramatic sound effects, this put the crimes to life and gave me a sense of fear when listening without having any visuals

4.) Movie: Forest Gump

September 27

Paramount +

I rewatched the movie. This time i definitely had a different perspective. The movie is about a titular hero who often finds himself in unusual but inspiring circumstances. Forest who has a disability learns how to run due to being bullied by his classmates. He has a strong love for his childhood friend Jennie. Forest is a fast runner which leads him to earning a scholarship to play college football. He even wins the football championship which leads him to meeting JFK. He then he enlisted in the war and leaves. There is one thing still on his mind; Jennie. Forest group gets ambushed during the war and it leaves his loving friend Bubba killed whom he had dreams of owning a shrimp boat with. Forest then decides to carry all the soldiers who are injured to safety which results in him earning the congressional Medal of Honor. Forest then learns that he has a love for ping pong and becomes a national ping pong champion. Through the mis en scene, editing, and sound, the movie allows the audience to follow along with this incredible journey by editing the movie to make us see it in a different perspective and by allowing us to relate to it on a deeper level by putting sound effects and building a timeline. The producers do this by editing clips a certain way and adding certain sad visuals and making sure we feel everything that Forest is experiencing.
